Where to take the ferry from Capri to Sorrento

Ferries to Sorrento typically set sail from the port of Marina Grande, which is on the northern side of Capri. This is the island’s main port, where all catamarans and hydrofoils arrive and depart. Around the port you will find cafés, restaurants and shops, as well as ticket offices, car and scooter rental agencies and boat tour operators.

The port at Marina Grande is easily accessible from the Piazzeta in the historic center of Capri town, with several options available. The quickest and most scenic route is with the funicular, taking about 5 min down the hill.

If you prefer to walk, it takes around 15-20 min from Capri town. You can also hail a taxi anywhere on the island and there are also frequent buses that connect the Piazzeta, Anacapri and other parts of town with the port.

Where does the ferry arrive in Sorrento?

Ferries from Capri normally dock at Marina Piccola, the main port of Sorrento, which is located just bellow the historic center. It’s about a 15-min walk to Piazza Tasso, the central square of Sorrento, however this involves stairs and uphill streets.

Alternatively, there are local buses that connect the port with the center and other areas in town and taxis are usually available outside the port. You can also hop on the public elevator from the port to the Villa Comunale gardens, which is a stone’s throw from the center of Sorrento.

In the area around Marina Piccola, there are cafés, bars and restaurants, as well as shops, ticket offices and parking lots.

When is the best time to book Capri to Sorrento ferry tickets

The Capri - Sorrento ferry route is very popular in summer, especially for day trips, so it’s best to book in advance to secure your preferred sailing time, rather than book on the day of your trip.

During the summer high season (June to early September), we recommend booking your ferry tickets at least 3-4 weeks in advance, especially if you plan on traveling from Capri in the morning or evening. These are the busiest crossings and often sell out first.

For ferry trips in the shoulder months, namely April-May and late September-October, you can usually afford to book your tickets 1-2 weeks ahead, though the weekends and holidays can still be busy.

In the low season, which runs from November to March, there are fewer daily crossings. However, it is also less busy during these months, so booking your ferry tickets to Sorrento a few days before departure is usually enough.
