Piraeus is one of the busiest ports in Greece, serving thousands of passengers every year. The demand for ferry services from Piraeus usually peaks during the summer months, around Christmas and Easter, as well as on other major public holidays and long weekends.
If you plan on travelling from Piraeus between June and August, we highly recommend booking your tickets at least 1-2 months in advance. The rest of the year, you can book even a few days ahead of your trip, however routes are usually less frequent.

- Confirm the departure gate of your ferry in Piraeus before heading to the port, especially if you are a first-time traveler. The port is extensive, so you may have to walk 10-20 minutes to reach your gate. Alternatively, you can get around the port with the PPA shuttles, which serves passengers free of charge.
- You can travel from the center of Athens and the airport of Athens to the port of Piraeus by public transport (metro, tram, bus). Alternatively, you can reach the port of Piraeus by taxi in about 30 minutes, depending on traffic conditions.
- The port of Piraeus can get very busy, especially during the summer months. Therefore, we advise you to be at the port at least 1 hour before your scheduled departure, especially if you are travelling with a car.

The port of Piraeus is located in the greater Athens area, just 12 km southwest of the center of the capital, and serves daily passenger ferry services to and from the Aegean islands. You can easily reach the port via the intercity railway, metro, bus and taxi. In the area around the port, there are cafés, restaurants, shops, hotels and other useful traveler amenities.
The port is divided into gates (E1-E12), with each gate serving specific destinations.

Greek ferry companies are usually quite flexible regarding luggage size and weight. Each ferry company has its own baggage allowance policy, however we recommend that you bring up to 50 kg of luggage.
You can keep your luggage next to you or store your bags and suitcases in the designated luggage area on the ferry to Heraklion.
Good to know: bear in mind that there is no check-in procedure for luggage items.
The duration of the ferry ride from Piraeus depends on the destination and type of vessel. In general, the following applies:
- Argosaronic Islands: the shortest route is from Piraeus to Aegina, and the trip lasts about 10 minutes.
- Cyclades: the fastest ferry is on the Piraeus - Kythnos route, and the journey takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes.
- Dodecanese: the fastest ferry is on the Piraeus - Patmos route, and the journey takes around 7 hours.
- North Aegean: the shortest route is on the Piraeus - Ikaria (Agios Kirikos) route and takes about 6 hours.
- Crete: the fastest ferry is on the Piraeus - Rethymno route, and the journey takes approximately 5 hours 45 minutes.
