If you’re traveling to the islands near Sicily, keep in mind that seasonal restrictions are in place for non-residents traveling with cars, scooters and other vehicles.
Local authorities have implemented these vehicle regulations to protect the unique environment of the Sicilian islands and reduce traffic during the busiest months of the year.
Can I bring a car to the islands of Sicily?
Vehicle restrictions apply to several islands off the coast of Sicily on the following dates:
- Aeolian islands
- Aegadian and Ustica
- Pelagie Islands
This means that during those periods non-residents are usually not allowed to travel to these islands by ferry with their motor vehicles unless they qualify for an exemption.
If you plan to drive to your departure port, you will find parking areas nearby where you can leave your vehicle before boarding your ferry.
Permits and exemptions for vehicles on the islands near Sicily
Some exceptions apply to limitations on vehicle circulation, with each islands having its own rules.
In order to qualify for an exemption, a permit must be issued by the local municipality. Travelers must apply for their permit well in advance and display it in their vehicle at all times.
Aeolian Islands
- Lipari, Vulcano, and Filicudi: Non-residents can request a permit if they own property on the island or plan to stay for at least 7 nights.
- Salina: Vehicles with foreign license plates may also be permitted to circulate and non-residents who have booked to stay on the island for 7 nights or more.
Pelagie Islands
- Lampedusa: Property owners who pay the local waste tax (TARI), as well as people traveling with camper vans and motorhomes who have authorization to stay at a local campsite, may be given a permit.
- Linosa: Vehicles belonging to property owners who are registered taxpayers are eligible for a permit.
Aegadian and other Sicilian islands
- Favignana: Vehicles are permitted if you are a property owner paying local taxes and staying for at least 6 days, or if you are driving a vehicle with a foreign licence plate. Caravans and camper vans are allowed if you are staying at an authorised campsite or parking area.
- Ustica: If you are a property owner who pays local taxes, if you're staying at least 15 days (proof required) or if you're driving a vehicle registered in another country, you can apply for a permit.
