Can I take my car to Formentera?
Yes, you can bring your car on a ferry to Formentera from Ibiza (or from ports in mainland Spain) without restrictions from the 1st of October to the 31st of May.
However, from the 1st of June to the 30th of September, the island implements a system to regulate vehicle flow. This restriction affects all motor vehicles that access Formentera, drive and park on public roads. The goal is to preserve the island’s peace and purity and secure sustainability, for now and the future.
Important: note that quad bikes, caravans and motorhomes are not allowed during this period.
In order to enter the island with a vehicle (yours or a rented one) during the summer months, you need to get a permit, which you can apply for on the Formentera Eco website. You also have to pay a fee that is:
- €6 per day, with a minimum amount of €30, for cars
- €3 per day, with a minimum amount of €15, for motorbikes
Hybrid vehicles get a 50% discount, while electric vehicles are not charged with the fee.
Exceptions to the Formentera vehicle transporestriction
There are certain vehicles that are exempt from the Formentera transportation restriction, such as vehicles belonging to:
- Residents of Formentera
- Owners with a second home in Formentera (1 vehicle per owner only)
- Residents of Ibiza who work in Formentera
- Individuals with reduced mobility

Do I need a car in Formentera?
Formentera is a small island where the maximum distance is about 19 km from end to end, so you can easily explore it without a car. To get around, we recommend you bring or rent a bike, or even walk, as most of the roads are not much of a challenge (except the one leading to Pilar de la Mola).
The island also has an excellent network of 32 “green routes” of traffic-free rural paths and tracks. The terrain is mostly flat, so exploring the island on foot is a great option. These “green routes” are also great for cycling. Many of them require only 15-30 minutes to complete by bike, while, for those who prefer a longer adventure, there are some taking 45-60 minutes.
As for bike rentals, you will find plenty at the port (La Savina) and across the island. There are also e-bikes available if you feel you need a boost along the way!
Tip: before you decide how to move around the island, you can first discover all the available options to travel there! Check our complete guide on how to get to Formentera from Ibiza, Mallorca or mainland Spain, and plan your trip step by step!
