Vehicle regulations on the Aeolian Islands
Seasonal rules for cars and more
If you’re traveling to the Aeolian Islands by ferry, keep in mind that seasonal restrictions are in place for non-residents traveling with cars, scooters and other vehicles.
Local authorities have implemented these vehicle regulations to protect the unique environment of the Aeolian Islands and reduce traffic during the busiest months of the year.
Can I bring a car to the Aeolian Islands?
Vehicle restrictions apply to all 7 main islands in the Aeolian archipelago on the following dates:
- Panarea and Stromboli: from 1 May to 31 October
- Alicudi: from 1 June to 31 October
- Lipari, Vulcano and Filicudi: from 1 June to 30 September
- Salina: from 15 June to 15 September
This means that during those periods non-residents are usually not allowed to bring motor vehicles to the Aeolian Islands unless they qualify for an exemption.
Permits and exemptions for vehicles on the Aeolian Islands
Some exceptions apply to limitations on vehicle circulation. For example, on Lipari, Vulcano, and Filicudi, non-residents can request a permit if they own property on the island or plan to stay for at least 7 nights. In Salina, vehicles with foreign license plates may also be permitted to circulate.
In order to qualify for an exemption, a permit must be issued by the local municipality. Travelers must apply for their permit well in advance and display it in their vehicle at all times. For more information on vehicle regulations of the Aeolian Islands, we recommend checking with local municipal authorities before you travel.
Tip: It's easy to get around the Aeolian Islands without your own vehicle. On the more populated islands, you'll find scooter and e-bike rentals, local bus services and taxis. You can also explore the islands on foot.
