Information about Korčula
Korčula is one of those rare places where history, natural beauty, and cultural tradition seem to coexist effortlessly. Nicknamed “Little Dubrovnik” thanks to its fortified old town and signature terracotta rooftops, Korčula is one of the Mediterranean’s most impeccably preserved medieval gems.
Legend has it that this island is the birthplace of Marco Polo, and there’s an entire museum, the Marco Polo House, dedicated to his legacy. One can even argue that the old town is an open-air museum in itself: just wander through its narrow cobbled streets and you will surely agree. If you’re up for a bit of a climb, the bell tower of St. Mark’s Cathedral will reward you with stunning views over the sparkling Adriatic.
Venture beyond the old town, and Korčula reveals a whole new side of dense pine forests, silver-green olive groves, and renowned vineyards. The island’s beaches are no less impressive, with Pupnatska Luka standing out as a highlight with its transparent turquoise. And then there are scenic villages like Lumbarda, with its laid-back charm, and Vela Luka, with its photogenic waterfront.
The island’s wines, such as Grk and Pošip, deserve an honorable mention, as they are crisp, aromatic, and pair especially well with the seafood- and meat-based recipes that are a staple of the local cuisine.
